The Sign For Change Teacher Training

This teacher training is innovative and tailor-made for professionals already involved in deaf children education or who want to learn more about Sign Language and Deaf Culture. Its aim is to provide training on the Social Innovation Education innovative to make education more inclusive and transformative for deaf children.

After completion of this training teachers are expected to be able to:

  • Apply the Social Innovation Education in their teaching context
  • Develop co-creation labs for Social Innovation Campaigns
  • Understand the changemaking potential of Sign Language in education,
  • Apply deaf role models in their teaching practices
  • Understand the potential active citizenship, inclusion, empathy, and empowerment of the deaf students in education

The modules of the online training

Social Innovation Education Theory and Practice

This module introduces Social Innovation Education (SIE) its design principles, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that contextualise Social Innovation, and the step-by-step guidelines for organising and running the co-creation labs where Social Innovation actually happens.

Upon the completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Define SIE and the three design principles
  • Provide examples of successful social innovation projects in schools
  • Apply the SDGs and explain their importance for Social Innovation
  • Define the SIE competences
  • Organise and implement the co-creation labs

Sign Language and Deaf Student’s Potential for Changemaking

In this module, you will delve into the world of Sign Languages, exploring its cultural significance, linguistic complexity, and profound impact on the lives of deaf children. You will find material to understand Sign Language itself and learn about the potential it holds in education and when using Social Innovation Education.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Understand the role of Sign Language in own teaching practice
  • Recognise the potential of Sign Language in education
  • Consider Deaf Education and Sign Language in own teaching practice
  • Integrate Deaf Education and Sign Language in Social Innovation projects

Inclusion, Empowerment and Active Citizenship of the d/Deaf Community

Throughout this module, you will delve into effective strategies for empathy, citizenship education, communication practices, and teaching practices that promote not only the inclusion of deaf individuals but also their empowerment as active and engaged citizens.

Upon the completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Integrate inclusion, empathy and citizenship education in teaching practices and school contexts
  • Recognise the d/Deaf Community
  • Respectfully engage with deaf people
  • Foster inclusive communities with deaf people/communities in school and classrooms

Campaigning & Sign Language

This module works as a guide on how to design and implement the dissemination and exploitation part of a Social Innovation project. The campaigning process will allow students to promote their work and engage the relevant stakeholders and target groups.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Design and plan a campaigning strategy
  • Help students develop their own campaigning strategy
